What are Neuropsychological Evaluations and Psychoeducational Evaluations? How are they different?

Neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations are both in-depth assessments of skills and abilities linked to brain functionality. The skills assessed include attention and executive function, problem-solving, memory, language, visual-spatial skills, academic skills, and social-emotional functioning and academic abilities. The results are compared to the normative developmental framework peers of the same age.

Neuropsychological Evaluations

  • Completed by clinical psychologists specializing in neuropsychology who work in private practices/hospitals
  • Includes academic testing
  • Guides diagnosis and treatment from a therapy-based perspective as well as provide recommendations and possible accommodations.
  • Provides broader and deeper information on cognitive functioning

Psychoeducational Evaluations

    • Performed by a licensed psychologist or school psychologist often in the K-12 grade range to determine if special education is needed
  • Includes a battery of cognitive, assessment of processing and academic functioning, behavioral, emotional, and personality, psychopathology tests and self-report measures, a review of records, a collateral interview with family/friends/doctors/therapists, analysis of data, and report writing.
  • Targeted evaluations that quantify the difficulties in reading, writing, and/or math and the impact of cognitive functioning on academics.
  • Focused more on identifying certain learning disabilities, mood disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Psychological Evaluations

  • Can be a clinical interview with no testing; questionnaires are used to gather historical data
  • Can include extended battery of tests as above
  • Provide a letter with diagnosis and possible accommodations

What to Expect

Prior to an evaluation, you will be required to attend an intake with the provider to discuss concerns and go over the testing process. Then you will make an appointment for the evaluation. Gather any information such as report cards, prior testing, etc.

An evaluation consists of an in-depth record review, interview, and testing in both cognitive and academic domains. You will be asked about your symptoms, medical history, educational history, and some portions of the testing may concern your home life and the medications being taken. Some portions of the testing may be computerized and will test intellect, higher-level executive skills, attention, learning/memory, language, visual-spatial skills, motor and sensory skills, and mood/personality.

Evaluations that the psychologist identified for each individual case are based on the intake interview and record review. The time frame for the evaluation will depend on how long it takes to complete each section as well as the range and extent of the instruments the provider decides to use. Regardless of the type of evaluation you should receive a comprehensive report with recommendations. The psychologist should schedule a time to review the results with you.
